Acid Pauli – MOD

“Basically my albums have developed into my personal field of experimentation” says Martin Gretschmann, aka Acid Pauli. Known primarily for his psychedelic, leftfield club sounds that weave between slo-mo beats and deep burners, his EPs, remixes and collaborations have generally been more focused on the dancefloor. With his latest album, MOD (his third full-length released on his own Ouie label), Gretschmann goes in a tangential direction, drawing inspiration from modular synthesis and the scene that has flourished around it over the last years. The result is an album produced almost entirely with modular systems, inspired by the possibilities and restrictions of carefully shepherding machines that sing to themselves.
“I know a lot of people who somehow found themselves and electronic music in a boring dead-end alley, and who have now found completely new worlds through modules”, he explains. Experimental as MOD may be, it certainly isn’t ‘difficult’ or inaccessible – or as someone put it, the nine tracks here are “soft, elegant, fluent, dreamy – the tracks achieve the effect of space-time morphing – magical states”.
The album is best heard as one continuous piece, allowing it to unfold its delights gently. Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take – often with Gretschmann recording up to 10 different versions before choosing the final piece.
Propagating Flip Flops starts things off – its glitchy textures and sync-shifting set the scene for the album – the sounds evolving and developing before resolving into a warm, ethereal tone. Intellijel Bell is made up of deep loops of rhythmic sounds, while metallic sounds and a submerged jazzy undertone hint at the classic Acid Pauli sense of fun. Acid On Yusef uses looped up rhythmic pulses and bass tones, joined by modulated beeps and blips. A touch of that iconic liquid acid sound pulls it together and gives the track its name. Sublime Frequencies Of Cairo is another beatless, floating collection of loops that shift and morph – seemingly suspended in space, before an ambient orchestral element resolves the track.
As the title suggests, Du Brecht, Ich Dub revolves around a bass heavy sound, building up a rhythm of disparate elements that develop into a tense yet somehow weightless groove. Life Polarizer is further evidence that an Acid Pauli album will always somehow drift back towards the groove. The track works the effects pretty hard – sounds pinging between left and right and ebbing and flowing into the mix. Peace Waer Schoen also makes heavy use of delay to create a dubbed-out, wonky feel. The freedom of getting away from computer based production is referenced sardonically in Quantize Hell – its bleepy sounds find a rhythm and progression outside of the grid. Finally, No Kick, No Cry brings the journey to a close – it’s the first and only kick drum of the album and adds a structure to the magical unpredictability of the looped sounds.
The album’s artwork perfectly reflects these sounds within – created by musician and artist Billy Caso. Each track is also accompanied by a minimalist video, created with a device from this modular world – the “Vidiot”. It’s clear that in MOD, Gretschmann has produced a homage to the modular scene that might inspire as many people as it delights.

Lisbird 🐈 KATER BLAU Garten 🧡 Tutti d’amore

Nathan Fake – Blizzards

Nathan Fake will release his 5th studio album on 3rd April, returning to his own Cambria Instruments label.

Using a deliberately restricted hardware setup and recording most of the tracks in a single take, Blizzards dives straight into the eye of the storm for a turbulent 11-track package.

The title – a partial nod to the tumultuousness of British politics – but equally apt at describing Nathan’s cyclical melodic leads, serves as a visual cue to accompany each track. Glistening nodes are spun into geometric oddities before spiralling through frantic rhythmic frameworks, from the radiant layers of ‘Pentiamonds’ to the dissonant delirium of ‘Stepping Stone’. Beginning with the intention of “soundtracking the ideal rave”, Blizzards borrows heavily from Nathan’s approach to his live show, capturing unadulterated moments of creative insight to form microscopically detailed aesthetic statements.

Whilst the lush melodies he is known for are central to the album, there is also a heavy dose of experimentation, expanding on the familiar sonic palette of his earlier work. For every warm synth and resolved cadence there is an atonal spiral and gritty distortion lurking around the corner.

As might also be expected of his music, polyrhythms feature throughout, sometimes taking on a life of their own but always providing a precise percussive grounding for melodies to weave in and out of. The effects of this are at times disorienting, at others psychedelic, but always intriguing, owing to the influences of early rave and IDM as much as folklorism and spirituality.

Norfolk born and bred, Nathan’s first encounters with electronic music came via the radio, hearing the likes of Aphex Twin and Orbital, and reading about the equipment that they used in magazines. This was the stimulus for him to buy some gear and begin his own sonic experiments and, linking with James Holden in 2003, Nathan’s early output came via his fledgling Border Community label. His debut album “Drowning In A Sea Of Love” (2006) was a triumphant record, drawing a rapturous reception from the likes of Pitchfork, The Guardian and Mixmag. Recording two further albums for Border Community, “Hard Islands” (2009) and “Steam Days” (2012), with ‘Providence’ arriving on Ninja Tune in 2017. The release of Blizzards will be followed by tour dates of his live club show across the UK and Europe throughout 2020.

Kompakt – TOTAL 16

With their TOTAL Series the Cologne/Germany based label Kompakt regularly sets a landmark on the German electronic music map. As always the créme de la créme of German electronic music collaborated in the sampler. A Must-Have for all of you music connoisseurs.

What they say:

Our TOTAL compilation series hardly needs an introduction: we rummage through the Kompakt releases to select our favorites from the past year that reflect our best and unsaid tracks, compiled and packaged as a cohesive whole. For TOTAL 16, the 2xCD and digital track listing features 25 prominent cuts from artists such as THE FIELD, WEVAL, REX THE DOG, TERRANOVA, HUNTER/GAME, FRANKEY & SANDRINO, JOHN TEJADA, BLOND:ISH or PATRICE BÄUMEL. On top, TOTAL 16 includes eight exclusive tracks which happen to make up the 2xLP vinyl track listing. What you have is a dynamic assortment and comprehensive profile of Kompakt’s current label portfolio, including both newcomers and veteran producers in peak form.

Keeping up a good old TOTAL tradition, we also planted brandnew material from core artists and friends – check out exclusive tracks such as MICHAEL MAYER’s aptly named ACTION, an absolutely rinsing acid cracker, or MATIAS AGUAYO’s stellar KOMM, sitting comfortably among his best and most stirring work to date. Meanwhile, JÜRGEN PAAPE drops silky, atmospheric synth pads on EDEN and THE MODERNIST teams up with Hot Chip’s JOE GODDARD for the pop-infused THE PRICE OF LOVE. Another highlight is the debut release from exciting newcomer LAKE TURNER: BEACON FIELDS is a misty- eyed, melancholic piece focussing on exquisite electronic textures and sweeping melodies.

As with previous TOTAL installments, we collect these exclusives on a separate 2xLP edition, but like to add a handful of cuts that can only be found on the vinyl version – for TOTAL 16, these include ALEX UNDER’s LLAMAN A LA PUERTA, a densely layered, slow-paced synth jam that makes for a inspired detour from the propulsive, lean beats the Spanish producer has become known for. SWEET 100 present a masterfully crafted study in hypnotic minimalism on SIX, while VOIGT & VOIGT hark back to the pounding, sensual abrasiveness of early Auftrieb releases on DENKEN SIE LAUT, crossbred with the tongue-in-cheek gloom of the brothers’ later, more psychedelic offerings.

Karin Park & Pandora Drive – Hurricane

Daniel Bortz – Bella Avgvsta Part 1

Vermont – The Other Versions
