EPM podcast #137 – Haider

EPM Podcast 137 comes from producer, DJ and Breaker Breaker label runner Haider. His healthy disregard for genre boundaries is reflected in both the house, bass, jazz, UK funky, breaks and techno cross pollination of both his DJ sets and label output. As equally at home releasing house, jazz or even indie shoegaze his DJ sets also come with a wide and varied palette as showcased here. From the deep house grooves of Moodymann and Derrick Carter & Chris Nazuka he takes in Detroit’s Terrence Parker and Berlin’s deep and dubby Tigerskin alongside techno / breaks legend Martyn, scuzzy electro lord Gesloten Cirkel and even the dubbed out pop of Mariah Carey. Full of deep grooves, triumphant party rockers and dark heads down moments, Haider’s mix never strays from the funk. Read the exclusive interview here: https://ift.tt/3paQH0J

Originally cutting teeth in his native Sheffield bassline scene, Haider kicked off his career with the release of his debut record, ‘The Lock Off EP’, in 2008 under his then moniker DS1.The following year, Haider was commissioned to remix grime don Tempa T’s single ‘Next Hype’ as DS1. In addition to delivering the remix, he also did a cheeky UK funky bootleg, which became a massive unofficial anthem.

Heavily inspired by the purple sound of artists such as Joker and Starkey, between 2010 and 2013 Haider turned his hand to grime. With early productions being championed by Plastician on Rinse FM and Starkey on BBC Radio 1, both artists went on to release DS1 tracks on their respective labels Terrorhythm (‘I DNT KNW’) and Slit Jockey (‘Emotions Colours and Spacefood’.)

In 2015 while studying at Goldsmiths, Haider discovered Ross From Friends’ music, and was so impressed by its potential that he released his debut EP ‘Alex Brown’. This marked the first release on Haider Masroor’s newly launched label Breaker Breaker, beginning what he describes as “a mission to push forward thinking music, regardless of genre and hype.”

Since then Breaker Breaker have released the debut EPs for a broad spectrum of artists, including jazz duo The Colours That Rise (who recently dropped an album on Rhythm Section), Japanese producer RGL and most recently, indie shoegaze trio Night Tapes.

Further displaying a knack for recognising promising musicians and helping quality people to connect, Haider also managed new jazz leaders Yussef Kamaal – helping to book their first tour and signing the now classic album ‘Black Focus’ to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint in 2016.

Turning his hand to production again, Haider released the first EP under his own name in 2018 with the highly acclaimed ‘Do What You Love’ EP. Catching the attention of AUS Music’s Will Saul, he then released the equally rated ‘10961’ EP on the label the following year.

His latest EP ‘Dance Now, Cry Later’, once again on AUS Music, followed the release of ‘Endless Clouds’ and ‘The Muses Come Out at Night’ which were released on Haider’s own Breaker Breaker Records and Mella Dee’s Warehouse Music in 2020.

Hidden Empire – Lost Spirits (SVT286)

release date: February 05, 2021

The ‘Lost Spirits’ album is a nod to the certain kind of limitless magic which happens when people come together, without preconceptions, to get lost in the music together.

is an exploration in sounds for dancing. Catalysed by the catastrophe that was 2020, Hidden Empire step off the stage and retreat to the studio on a quest to find out what moves the people.

They seem to have found it. One out of the box, this 16 track album is designed for diversity. Hidden Empire oar their creative rudders, lending their hand from techno to deep house with a cheeky reach-around to a more downtempo vibe.

The first three tracks send you down the rabbit hole on a toe-tapping, hip-slapping aural escapade to the heavier edge of techno, the sublime vocals of Artche taking you directly back to those dancefloor moments when time stands still.

Taking the stairs two at a time in polyamorous heels, you’ll fall in love with the sassy, classy, savage vibes of ‘Resurgence’ and ‘Dark Matter’.

Transitioning to a more tribalesque vibe is ‘Organic Train’ a cut which blends the primitive, esoteric influence of the old world with the punchy, industrial sounds of the new world. Continuing on the exploratory sound voyage of downtempo, broken beaten space techno, ‘Mr. P’ stands in the forest listening to the plants talk to the people. Bebetta slips in with her inimitable style in the collectively inspired ‘All of Us’, keeping the Fun Dial turned right up.

Delving deep into the tundra, ‘Hectic Dreams’ become reality as the album turns towards the chunkier end of the musical spectrum. Punching out the bass-heavy bangers like ‘Once Upon’ (with a cameo from South African slam poet & spoken word artist The Lazarusman), Hidden Empire roll out with a flurry of cuts that are limitless in genre and luminous in effect.

Robag Wruhme – Freunde Legen Auf Köln

Robag Wruhme – Freunde Legen Auf Köln
Dear people,
we decided to publish the set from Cologne. The set is not very good in terms of mixing. That annoys me most of us, but I won’t shorten or cut anything out because I don’t think I’m a DJ who would ever think of pressing the sync-button. I am not perfect as we all cannot be perfect. In addition, the monitor-boxes could not be operated at full power because there were residents around and you know that the most important thing about our music is the loud volume. “Calma Calma” dear music-police!

It is also not easy to play music these days as the most important thing is missing from such streams – which is You. You as a crowd. I miss your smile, your closed eyes dancing and now and then the little tear. Everything I see in front of me is nothing. This is strange and not complete for me.

I am very grateful for all the feedback from around the world. That left me very speechless here in little Weimar. Think of your clubs, your festivals, your newspapers, your labels, your record stores, your DJs and your musicians. They all gave and give you the food (music).

‘Rodriguez Jr. debuts on Hicky & Kalo’s imprint Plaisirs Sonores this January with a scintillating new remix. He is an artist that needs little introduction. After breaking out over a decade ago on Laurent Garnier’s F-Communications, he has gone on to establish a global reputation at the cutting edge of electronic music, cementing his place among the vanguard with thrilling club cuts on the likes of Mobilee and Anjunadeep.

The French maestro has put his signature touch to ‘Un Rêve Étrange’, an original work from label founders Hicky & Kalo and mesmerising violinist Seth Schwarz. The inimitable producer brings the track into a world of his own, elevating the intensity with a fusion of the emotive melodies and a firm, rolling groove. The sleek rework offers up a captivating journey into a melodic yet melancholic dimension.

2021 couldn’t have started in a better way. Let’s just forget 2020 and move on.’
